Trucks straining: Road sector inefficiency causing Rs240b loss

LAHORE – The heavy axle loading is the crucial factor in rapid roads wear and tear in Pakistan, triggering road sector inefficiencies leading to a total yearly loss of Rs240 billion or 6. 8pc of the GDP. The loss is additional accelerated by the reality that truck motorists and owners consider overloading as a rewarding practice uninformed of the unfavorable results of this practice, said Director Highway, Research study & Training Centre. Dr Shafiq Ahmad further stated, “& ldquo; In Pakistan, currently there are around 150,000 registered business trucks (3 % of overall cars) plying on our roadways, consisting of 67pc 2 & 3 axle stiff trucks, 8pc articulated trucks and 25pc multi-axles trucks. Around 90pc business vehicles carry more than the enabled axle load on our roads. ” & rdquo; He was delivering a lecture on the effect of heavy axle packing on pavement performance on national highways network, organized by Pakistan Engineering Congress. Pakistan Engineering Congress president Ch Ghulam Hussain likewise addressed the seminar. “& ldquo; Given that there is no appropriate truck production industry in Pakistan, types and makes of these trucks varied. Bodies are mostly made in Pakistan by regional market not following proper measurements. Bed Ford (53 %), Hino (23 %), Nissan (16 %), Isuzu (5 %), other (3 %) prevail kinds of trucks,” & rdquo; he informed. According to a research study carried out by NHA, there is a trend in the industrial market to use multi axle trucks rather of 2-axle. In 1982, share of 2-axle was 96. 5 % that lowered to 69 % in 1995, whereas share of multi axle trucks enhanced from 4 % in 1982 to 31 % in 1995. Axle load research carried out in 1995 suggested that 88 % of trucks are loaded above the created limits of 8. 2 loads and 43 % above the axle load limitations of 12 loads. The prime reasons for the overloading are the dominant existence of 2-axle trucks i. e. 69 % in the total truck fleet currently plying on our nationwide highways. Various studies showed that 2 axle trucks trigger most of the damage t.
