Truck motorists take to Canberra roadways to oppose pay rates

Updated April 17, 2016 20:56:52 A convoy of more than 200 trucks has travelled through Canberra to oppose against new minimum pay rates mandated by the Roadway Safety Renumeration Tribunal (RSRT). The Federal government is pushing to axe the RSRT when Parliament resumes on Monday, following the independent body’s attempt to introduce brand-new pay rates for truck motorists. Some crossbenchers have prompted the Government to offer it concern over its quote to obtain the Australian Structure and Construction Commission (ABCC) Expense through the Upper Home. Staff members who drive for big fleets like Lindsay Fox and Toll are already covered under an award rate system, and the Transport Employees’ Union says professionals require the new rate to contend and stay safe on the roadways. But so-called owner truck drivers say the responsibility to charge clients to cover the enhanced pay rates will require thousands of them out of business. Truck driver Gordon Mackinlay stated the new rates would send out small operators broke within months. “I currently have not worked for a week,” he said. “This is not about politics; this is about people’s lives and it’s about our capability to feed our family essentially.” He stated it made his company model unsustainable. “For me to lawfully charge out under the brand-new rates I need to enhance my Sydney to Melbourne (charge) by 60 percent,” he stated. “When there’s an option for a client to use a fleet truck and not charge that 60 percent it doesn’t take Einstein to exercise that we remain in a hell of a lot of problem.” The group made its method through the borders of the ACT and came to Parliament Home on Sunday morning.
