Just one truck was utilized when Public Functions Director Larry Schildhauer started working for the city 40 years back, he said. The most recent member of the fleet– a 2016 International dump truck with rake purchased in March with $111,000 from the city’s Equipment Replacement Fund, according to City Administrator Justin Weiland– signed up with 2 other plow trucks, two motor graders, 2 front-end loaders and another truck used to transport snow. “That truck is brand new, and it’ll handle whatever snow we have to move,” Schildhauer stated. “It’s terrific to have good, trustworthy equipment.” Although a motor grader can use down-pressure to scrape off more snow and ice than a truck with a rake, Schildhauer said trucks have the advantage when it pertains to cost. “If the snow is loaded below the traffic, the motor graders will peel it off far better, but the truck plows are more affordable,” he stated. “In all, we’ve invested around 40 percent (about $25,000) of that budget,” he said. “This boils down to the light snow in January through March and April and up until now in the October-December timeframe.” Together with plowing the roadways, the public works department utilizes a mix of 12 percent salt and 88 percent sand to supply traction for drivers and assist ice melt, Schildhauer stated. “We do not opt for pure salt so it’s not as tough on the street or the automobiles,” he said.
