Gastonia firefighters bring back truck from early 1900s

GASTONIA, NC (WBTV) – Employees with the Gastonia Fire Department have been working to recover an old firetruck in their fleet. Firemens Leon Matthews and David Black recently got the truck working. Matthews stated the truck is a 1921 American LaFrance model. “& ldquo; (It & rsquo; s) basically fantastic that it still cranks and runs and moves,” & rdquo; said Matthews in an interview Wednesday. Black said the truck had actually altered hands in years past, however was acquired by the Gastonia Fire Department once again in 2001. He said it is the second motorized automobile the department contributed to its fleet. Matthews said dealing with the truck has actually been a pleasurable procedure. “& ldquo; I similar to firetrucks in general. Anything that’& rsquo; s got a red siren and lights, I love it,” & rdquo; he explained. Matthews said there is still some work to be done on the car. He said that the firefighters would like input from any citizens with knowledge of the American LaFrance motor. He inquires to contact Station 1 with the Gastonia Fire Department if they have any information to share.
