(Image: Courtesy of Boston Cops Department) Yes, the officers of the Boston Authorities Department have been handing out totally free ice cream since 2010 as part of Operation Hoodsie Cup. The idea is sweet: Officers serve free cups of ice cream to children in “pre-determined locations of the city” to promote a sense of neighborhood. The $89,000 truck debuted Monday at department headquarters in Roxbury, the Boston World reported, and was enabled by the Boston Cops Structure. “If you had actually told me 30 years ago that the Boston Cops Department would have an ice cream truck as part of its patrol force and my officers would be giving out Hoodsie Cups … I would’ve stated you were insane,” Commissioner William B. Evans stated in a release. “But, I absolutely like the brand-new truck and everything this program represents.” In the last 6 years, officers have handed out about 120,000 totally free Hoodsie Cups, according to the department. Last week, the St. Louis Metropolitan Authorities Department unveiled its own ice cream operation, Operation Polar Cops.
